The Enduring Appeal of Lanzarote
Lanzarote’s popularity as a holiday destination is the result of a number of winning factors. The most important for northern European visitors being the climate. As one of the seven islands that make up the Canarian archipelago, it boasts some of the driest and warmest weather in Europe.
There are less obvious seasonal differences on Lanzarote, as it can be hot and sunny during the winter months just as in summer. With minimal rainfall and long light evenings in the summer months, it has some of the best features of any climate around the world.
This is much of the reason why the island has become such a favourite over the last forty years. But in order to keep holidaymakers coming back, Lanzarote has had to develop other strings to its bow, as there are plenty of competing resorts hoping to win tourist business.
One of the ways in which the island has distinguished itself has been through very low key development. This includes not building apartment blocks above three storeys high and not allowing billboard advertising anywhere on the island.
As a result, the three main resorts offer a laidback environment for holidaymakers to enjoy, with an excellent choice of Lanzarote accommodation to select from. Self-catering is well provided for, with numerous apartment complexes and good quality Lanzarote holiday villas available in abundance.
In addition to the strict planning controls that define Lanzarote’s urban spaces, there is also a unique range of tourist attractions for visitors to take in. Such as an international art museum housed in one of the old fortresses that can be found in the capital of Arrecife.
Or the Cactus Garden, which is located in the village where formerly the red dye cochineal was harvested. The gardens are signposted by a giant metal sculpture of a cactus, just so that visitors know they have arrived.
These attractions are all the work of island born artist, César Manrique and each has a highly individual feel. With seven centres of art and culture in total to see, many visitors find that the best way to explore Manrique’s creations is via Lanzarote car hire.
The efforts that have been made to keep the island from becoming an eyesore or overdeveloped ensure that many holidaymakers return for a second or third time. Not only is there plenty to see, but as the flights to Lanzarote from most UK airports are only four hours, it isn’t a long way to come for a week of sunshine.
