South Africa is a holiday destination that offers many different experiences – but perhaps the most popular of these is its potential for a wine tasting break. The region’s wine producing history stretches back to the 17th century and in that time it has become one of the best makers of the drink in the world.

So what can you expect on a tailor-made luxury holiday to South Africa focused on all things wine-related?

Explore the winelands

South Africa’s winelands offer plenty of activities and attractions for all who visit. The scenic area boasts a number of vineyards, cheese venues, restaurants, pubs and wine bars that offer a real feast for the senses.

In particular, there are three restaurants in the winelands that are among world’s top 100 eateries – so make sure you try to get a booking at Le Quartier Francais in Franschoek, La Colombe in Constantia or Rust en Vrede in Stellenbosch for some quality food served up with some equally brilliant wine.

There are 14 wine routes across the Western Cape, meaning that it is unlikely you will be stuck for things to see and do. As well as the rather obvious pastimes of drinking and eating, you can indulge in a range of other activities.

Among these are hot air balloon rides, paragliding, hiking and cycling, as well as more unique things like relaxing in a bath of Pinotage wine.

One of the great things about South Africa’s wine region is that there is always something to do no matter what time of year you visit.

If you head there in the winter, you can settle down in front of a hearty fire with some wonderful food and drink, while visiting at other points of the year means you can see the grapes being gathered at harvest time and enjoy the different colours of the vineyards during the autumn.

Elsewhere in South Africa…

If you have time, make sure to explore some of South Africa’s other fantastic attractions.

You could head to the cities of Cape Town or Johannesburg for an urban break, or check out the wonderful scenery of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, Kruger National Park and the Wild Coast.
